The Birds

Some time back I saw a movie named THE BIRDS and here is my take on the feature.

A timeless classic, The Birds is a suspense thriller based on Alfred Hitchcock’s story which gives a tinge of the nature and its effects of the common man. The story revolves around a wealthy socialite Melanine Daniels meeting a lawyer Mitch Brenner in a pet shop where a small conversation ends upto Melanine’s idea of returning the favour he did.

To this, she drives around an hour to the North of San Francisco to a small island called Bodega Bay where Mitch spends his weekends with his sister and possessive mother. After reaching there she finds that his house was across the river from the city and she prefers to sail alone and reach the destination and presents a pair of love birds to Mitch’s sister. This route was the first one when she was attacked by a seagull.

Soon after Mitch discovered about Melanine’s presence in town he invites her for dinner at his house and introduced her to his family. Later she stays with Annie Hayworth and came to know that once she was in a relationship with Mitch which was broken because of his possessive mother. By this time, Melanine and Mitch were attracted towards each other and Cathy (Mitch’s sister) had accepted her heartfully.

On her continued stayed in the city, she came across many instances where the seagull or the crows attack her and her acquaintances. During the birthday celebration of Cathy the kids were attacked by the birds through which the residents were under shock. In another remarkable incident where Melanine visits a local school where Annie is working as a teacher the audiences were shocked to see around 100 birds in the playground which were ready to attack the school kids and harm them.

Gradually the movie started becoming dark and full of suspense even the silence in some of the scenes was full of horror. The shrieking voice of the birds also maintains the horror behind the scenes. The continuous bird attack on the residents was increasing at a higher speed.

In all this the birds killed many people including one friend of Mitch’s mother and Annie. Atlast when the birds attacked Melanine in Mitch’s house though which resulted in injured Mitch and with a hairline escape they left the city and the birds behind to a new road. Though the movie finishes abruptly but it leaves a silent horror in the viewers mind. This is one of the finest works of Alfred Hitchcock.
