FISH Philosophy!!!

Sometime back my colleague gave a presentation on the FISH Philosophy; it is a theory from John Christensen; which was derived by placing cameras in fish market to study the behaviour of workers working actively.

As the book suggests, “When we choose to love the work we do, we can catch our limit of happiness, meaning and fulfillment every day.”

The study shows how 75% of normal human life is consumed in work related areas as going to office, spending time in working and other such meagre activities and by the time Friday appears everyone sighs and says “Thank God its Friday” and gives their 100% of the energy.

The promoters and writer proudly shares that this book will benefit the managers which will indeed increase employee retention and motivate people to take pride in what they do; so it says no work is small you should perform your duties with pride and enthusiasm.

The story is a parable; an invented story about finding the deep source of energy, creativity and passion that exists inside each of us by learning to love what we do, even if at the moment we may not be doing exactly what we love.

The scene of the fish market shown in the book was from throwing fishes & crabs to different counters and shouting….five crabs flying to Wisconsin. The fish market is always full of noise, action and energy full in people.

The book also states that if we make mistake in our work, the customer is upset and we receive lot of criticism but if we do our work well, no one notices; so no acknowledgment of the good result and no appreciation which in turn results in no positive feedback from the employees .

There is always a choice about the way you do work, even if there is not a choice about the work itself. This theory helps you to finish your tasks as per your capabilities and interest. In short we can choose the attitude we bring to our work.

You choose the attitude you bring to work each day. That choice determines the way you are at work. Or put it this way that as long as you are here, why not choose to be world famous rather than ordinary? It seems so simple. “Simple to understand, but more difficult to do”

There are many ingredients to choose ones own self attitude; when a person calls a meeting and he should speak from his heart. Find a message that communicates the notion of choosing your attitude in a way that everyone will understand and personalize. It also provides motivation and persists with faith.

Following are excerpts from fishphilosophy.com and FISH Book; respectively…

What is the FISH! Philosophy?
The FISH! Philosophy includes four simple, interconnected practices:

Be There is being emotionally present for people. It’s a powerful message of respect that improves communication and strengthens relationships.

Play taps into your natural way of being creative, enthusiastic and having fun. Play is the spirit that drives the curious mind, as in “Let’s play with that idea!” It’s a mindset you can bring to everything you do.

Make Their Day is finding simple ways to serve or delight people in a meaningful, memorable way. It’s about contributing to someone else’s life, not because you want something out of it, but because that’s the person you want to be.

Choose Your Attitude means taking responsibility for how you respond to what life throws at you. Once you are aware that your choice impacts everyone around you, you can ask yourself, “Is my attitude helping my team or my customers? Is it helping me to be the person I want to be?”
Through The FISH! Philosophy, we build stronger relationships with the team members we work with, the customers we serve, the students we teach and the people we love.

Abstract from the cover of the Book itself:
A powerful parable that will help you love the work you do- even if you can’t always do work that you love.

Imagine a workplace where everyone chooses to bring energy, passion and a positive attitude to the job every day. Imagine an environment in which people are truly connected to their work, colleagues and customers. In this engrossing parable, a fictional manager must transform a chronically unenthusiastic and unhelpful department into an effective team. Down the street from her office, Seattle’s very real Pike Place Fish is wildly successful thanks to its fun, bustling atmosphere and great customer service. By applying ingeniously simple lessons learned from the actual Pike Place fishmongers, our manager discovers how to energize those who report to her and effect an astonishing transformation in her workplace.
